Both processes, namely the ‘Computer Delivered’ & ‘Pen & Paper’ based, consist of three modules — Listening, Reading and Writing. Additionally, the fourth module, namely the Speaking test (as the name suggests) is oral and conducted face-to-face i.e. in person (or virtually, under exceptional circumstances) with a certified examiner – at a separate time & place. Although rarely, it has been seen that all four modules can happen at the same venue (on the same day).
COMPUTER-DELIVERED (Digital)
Benefits of taking a Computer Delivered exam –
Typing option: The sections, mainly the Writing section is completed using a tool, replicating the ‘Microsoft Word’ application, providing the convenience of typing and editing without worrying about ‘erasing or overwriting (manually)’ the content, which might need rectification, if a bit of it appears to be unsatisfactory. Word count: A very important point that needs to be highlighted is the count of words is displayed real time, right on the screen. This is very helpful, as it allows the user to save time, by keeping track of the word count and not exceeding the limit or leaving it unmet.
Navigation ease: The computer interface allows easy navigation between different sections & pages, allowing test takers to review / revise to be able to make changes to their answers more efficiently and effectively, without compromising on the time consumption.
Reading and Listening Tools: This type of exam provides additional features such as highlighting and underlining, thus enhancing the overall test-taking experience.
Faster Results: Test takers receive results within 3 to 5 days, significantly quicker than the 13-day waiting period for paper-based results.
Frequency: Test takers have the advantage of choosing from any of three slots that are available on any chosen day, which is open seven days a week. As a result, it allows them to choose a time that suits their schedule, making it more flexible for the candidates to apply at their convenience.
PEN-PAPER BASED (Traditional)
Familiar test format: Many test takers are more accustomed to the traditional paper-based format, which includes reading printed texts and answering questions using stationery.IELTS coaching classes in Janakpuri West.
Writing style: Some individuals find it more comfortable to express their thoughts and ideas using pen and paper rather than typing, as they might not be very familiar with the keyboard and the required standard typing speed, to finish it within the stipulated time.
Familiarity: Some test takers may feel more comfortable and familiar with traditional pen and paper testing, especially if they have been using this format throughout their education.
No Technical Issues: Computer-based exams may encounter technical issues such as system crashes or malfunctions. Pen and paper testing eliminates these concerns, providing a more reliable and straightforward experience.
Handwriting Speed: For individuals who are more accustomed to handwriting, the pen and paper format may allow for faster and more efficient expression of thoughts, especially in the writing section.
Personal Preference: Some individuals simply prefer the tactile experience of writing with a pen and paper. This personal preference could lead to reduced stress and improved performance.
No Keyboarding Skills Required: In a computer-based exam, test takers need to be proficient in keyboarding. Pen and paper exams may be more accessible to those who are not comfortable or skilled in using a computer.
Having said that, it completely depends on the perspective & user friendliness of the candidate with the delivery process, however in our opinion, it normally takes extra effort & time to break out of the things that we are habituated to & transition onto a new thing. A prime example of this can be attributed to shifting from shopping things from the market onto buying things online. Initially, the online industry had to take a lot of losses & give hefty discounts to break the chain, however once people got used to the new concept, things started to fall in place. Thus, apparently, the Computer Delivered seems to have an advant-edge, if viewed in the current context & scenario of technology & digitalization.
