1.Taught Masters
A taught master’s degree will include some research but special importance will be on learning by teaching methodology. A student with a qualification close to a 3 year undergraduate degree will be entitled/permitted to apply. There are four main types of taught programme, Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc), Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Engineering (MEng), with each lasting 1-2 years full-time Programme. A taught programme, may include continuous assessment, examinations and final assessment for a master’s degree and often based on submission of a dissertation. Students are expected to attend weekly seminars, tutorials and lectures, much like an undergraduate degree, and assessment can be via exam, dissertation or project.
2. Research Masters
If you are interested in a masters by research, explore what aspects of your undergraduate studies you enjoyed the most and which areas you would have loved to study further, to acquire more advanced skills and training for a profession for a post graduate research at a PhD level. These courses are more independent in nature. A Research degree will help focus students take more responsibility for his or her work and schedule, basing their study around a thesis while being supervised usually by an expert senior academic supervisor and carry out extensive research, using detailed research methods. You’ll be trained in research methods and expected to do a substantial research project – a large piece of work that requires skill in setting objectives, fact finding, analysis, and interpretation. Your work should demonstrate a special understanding of the research methods appropriate to your specialist subject. The most prevalent research degree is a PhD, which usually takes 3-4 years to complete, and consists of in scripting a thesis between 60,000 – 100,000 words which is then presented in an oral examination or Viva.
